Press Pot (French Press) Coffee, Worth the Effort?
Posted April 8, 2009 – in: Blog, Nerdinesssource: The Atlantic Food Channel
Over Christmas I picked up a press pot or “French Press” based on the advice of my local Starbucks server. I was always fascinated by the design of the device and I had heard that it brews a richer more flavorful coffee. So I purchased one in search of the truth…. After some time using the press pot I found that not only does it brew a better pot by allowing the water more time to interact with the grounds, but it is in some cases faster and more easy to clean than my standard coffee maker. In addition to all of this when brewing coffee for friends it makes a great conversation piece for those who have not yet used a press. Be forewarned to those who don’t drink a substantial amount of coffee or caffeinated beverages, this method makes coffee that will glue you to the ceiling! Anyways, I came across this article by the Atlantic Food Channel and thought I would share it. Happy Barista’ing!
“The moment I first became enamored with press pot coffee was nearly concurrent with my entry into the profession. [Curator's note: the press pot also shows darker roasts to their best advantage, as Peet's coffee has always demonstrated.] Because the metal screen is more porous than a paper filter, it allows the coffee oils and sediment, and the entire coffee flavor, to be present in the cup, and because the filter is metal rather than paper, it doesn’t impart any other flavors (if you keep it clean), as paper filters inevitably do.”
