The Dark Knight (Blu-Ray Review)

Posted December 9, 2008 – in: Movies

Today’s movie review is one that needs no introduction. I am of course speaking about Chris Nolans masterful creation of the latest Batman film titled “The Dark Knight“.  I am not going to delve into the story of the movie, I am only going to say “BUY IT”. If you are or are not a comic fan it’s honestly one of the best movies I have seen in recent memory. My review is to determine whether or not purchase on Blu-Ray.

I base my decisions on a few simple factors 1. Picture Quality, 2. Audio Quality, 3. Replayability.

1. Picture Quality – This one is a no-brainer. The movie has sequences that were shot using IMAX cameras and the resoution on Blu-Ray in these instances is nothing short of amazing. The scenes that do not use IMAX are beautiful and of very high quality. The depth of field is so well pronounced that images seem to pop off the screen. Also, the fact that the movie was shot in pure digital eliminates any chance for artifacts that are commonly present in 35mm to digital transfers.

2. Audio Quality – The Dark Knight offers Dolby Digital and Dolby True HD. The soundtrack music comes off clear and adds a level of atmosphere to the movie that helps create emotion in this masterful film, though the bass can be so deep at points that dialogue gets lost. As for surround sound I was left slightly disappointed. I was not immersed in sound the way I had hoped in the action sequences. But these small issues did not detract from the picture as a whole

3. Replayability – The movie itself is easily worth several watches. The special features on the movie disc, which allow you watch how certain points in the movie were made are interesting though the overall feels a little lacking. I have not yet watched the “Special Features” disc I might write something about them at a later point though I don’t believe Special Features are usually ever enough to sway my decision to purchase a film (with exceptions like “Blade Runner”).

In conclusion I would like to offer my opinion as to whether or not “The Dark Knight” deserves “The Blu-Ray Tax”. I would say yes. The film is amazing and having a higher definition picture quality with access to the IMAX footage make it a simple recommendation. Enjoy.
