Podcast Playlist – Work Tech

Posted January 3, 2009 – in: Blog

podcast

If you own an iPod and would like talk radio if only they would talk about topics that you want to hear. Than let me introduce to the podcast. I Have compiled ten of my favorite into a podcast “pod-list” that I call “Work Tech”. I like to play the following while at work. After watching this plethora of tech talk you will be amazed at the arsenal of knowledge and software solutions that can take you from tech zero to tech hero. But it can’t be all tech all the time so I have added a few comedy and news sites. Without further delay here’s my top ten.

cranky-geeks

1. Cranky Geeks – Hosted by one of the most outspoken journalist of techonology news John C. Dvorak, think of him as the andy rooney of the internet. However, beneath his cranky exterior lies a well informed, highly opinionated critic who is unafraid to state the shortcomings and mistakes of even the most media-darling tech companies. He is also a frequent guest on TwiT, co-hosts “no-agenda” with Adam Curry and writes for PC Mag, Marketwatch and his own blog dvorak.org/blog which he so frequently plugs that it has become a drinking game. Cranky Geeks brings a wide-range of industry insiders and rarely dissapoints. This podcast should almost be required listening if you are in the tech industy.

twit3002.  TwiT – If you were one of the lucky ones who watched TechTV back when it dealt with actual tech, then you will definitely recognize the host of my #2 podcast. Leo LaPorte is best described as the Will Smith of technology news. No he’s not a major action star, but his persona and charisma exist on that level in the tech community. I don’t think you can find an unkind word spoken about Leo who hosts several podcasts on his TwiT.tv covering everything from Mac news Mac Break Weekly to helping less experienced a.k.a. “noobs” on “The Tech Guy”, he’s the hardest working podcaster in the business. If you like tech, have an interest in tech or your just looking for a mentor to help you understand what the hell the geek in your life is talking about then take a trip to “Leoville” and check out TwiT.

hak53. Hak.5 – (Not for the casual computer listner) – Hak.5 has been around for four years however I only recently discovered them as they were just picked up on the Revision3 network. Hak.5 covers a level internet news and devilishly sweet hackery. The “hacks” or “network security auditing techniques” as I refer to them are portrayed like weekend projects on an educational network. They make it fun while maintaining a sophistication level that allows you obtain a deep understanding of what is being covered. They host weekly Lan parties and have a community who shows unending support. I can’t say that this podcast is for everyone, but I can say that if you are even the slightest bit interested in tech trickery then this the podcast for you. Also, another “must view” if you are in the tech industry.

buglepodcast4.The Bugle – Hosted by “The Daily Show’sJohn Oliver and British comedian Andy ZaltzmanThe Bugle” covers world news with a hilarious sarcasm and sharp British humor that is as entertaining as it is educational. The interaction between Andy and John is comedic genius and the level of education including english and world history shames me. Available every week and ocassionally visited by the highly stereotypical “The American” these British badboys of comedy bring the news to the net the way it should be….. with a laugh. Hosted by Times Online, who I have not listened to any of their other podcasts though I am sure they are quite good.

smodcast5.  Smodcast – (Explicit) – Hosted by director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Stike Back, Chasing Amy, etc.) and producer Scott Mosier “Smodcast” is an insight into the creative minds that have brought some of the greatest cult-comedies of the last decade. Covering topics from the film industry to Kevin’s fear of sharks and other obscure topics, the show segways into the most unusaul and sometimes mudane topics and will out of nowhere shift into ethical debates about capital punishment. The most amazing aspect of the show itself is how normal the discussion feels. At times I become so involved in the conversation and the topics are so hillarious that I will catch myslef laughing out loud. Ocassionaly Smodcast has actors from various Smith films i.e. Jason Mewes and Walt Flanagan co-host, and it’s interesting to listen to them talk about the good ol days. If you are a fan of any or all of Kevin Smith’s films than this one is a no-brainer.

DL.tv has been cancelled but there are rumors of it coming back

dltv_podcast6.  dl.tv – Yet another former TechTV host joins the ranks of the podcast world elite. Robert Heron hosts a gadget and software review podcast that covers a wide vartiey of products from software, televisions, video games, etc.. Heron and company have an inside track on the latest and the greatest in tech as well as excellent taste. They also do an interesting triubute to geekdom by allowing viewers to submit pictures of their tech stations, workstations, or server rooms. Well worth tuning into. DL.tv also has a Folding @ Home group which is growing amazingly fast. I am part of their effort. If you don’t fold, you should put your idle cpu cycles to work. Hosted by ZDnet who runs several websites including PCmag.

systm7.  Systm – Patrick Noton hosts a DIY tech podcast which will have you up to your ears in awesome technophile weekend projects. From a DIY 3d Laser scanner (that works amazingly well) to electroluminescent track suit can only be described as Mr. Wizard on crack. If you are down to DIY, then don’t miss Revision 3’s systm. If nothing else watching Patrick Norton try to solder something is well worth a watch, and it’s even better when decides to destroy something. Revision 3 carries a great deal of the most popular tech podcasts. They also host Digg, which is one of my top ten websites. (Thats another post)

gbtv8.  Geekbrief.tv - The lighthearted charismatic and ever bubbly host of Geekbrief Cali Lewis can best be considered the Katie Couric of the podcast world. An outspoken macFangirl Cali has a flare for covering the major tech topics of the week while reviewing products from tech tools to tech toys. Hosted by her and produced by her husband Neil Geekbrief is really great way to get a woman’s view of tech. Not too mention Cali always has access to some good coupon codes for products and services, which have saved me a few bucks. Episodes are short and the credit outakes are always good for a chuckle. Geekbrief.tv

ign9.   IGN games – Two words “Hillary Goldstein…. Rocks!” okay well three words. Nevermind my shoutout to Hillary but IGN in my opinion are the most hilarious group of gamers ever, ever. Part of the Fox Network and affiliated with the likes of Rotten Tomatoes and AskMen.com, they have been in the game since the advent of modern gaming reviews and they remain strong due to their unbiased opinion and irreverent comedy. I listed the this podcast as “games” though their network breaks down into specific types like: PS3, Wii, 360 all with awesome names like “Three Red Lights” for the Xbox channel. If I had to choose one I would pick “Gamescoop” it’s their general news podcast and comprises the best (funniest) editors with the top news stories from each system.  IGN

Webdrifter has been cancelled

webdrifter10.  Webdrifter – Last of the ten though certainly not the least, Matin Seargent joined the Revision 3 Network and started “Webdrifter”. Anyone who is familiar with Martin’s work on…. you guessed it TechTV have already made up your minds. If you loved what he did as a host on TechTV then be ready for Martin Unleashed rev 2. Traveling across the U.S. and chasing down the creators and inspirations of some of the most obscure and seemingly bizzare sites on the net, by the end of the show you can’t beleive what you have seen only to be followed by Seargent’s witty and somewhat sarcastic “Final Thought”. Call it the “Jerry Springer” of cult internet sites. It ran for one season and hasn’t been officially renewed yet, so if you like it enough you may want to voice your opinion to Revision 3 to keep carrying it. Webdrifter

So that’s my Work Tech playlist of podcasts. Hope you enjoy them. I will assemble a new list some time down the road.
